Activities on the management of disused sealed radioactive sources

The activities on the management of disused sealed radioactive sources and radioactive waste have been continued.

After the successful completion of the regional project – IPA 2009 Programme for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection entitled: “Management of sealed radioactive sources, including radioactive lightning rods and strengthening the effectiveness of the regulatory infrastructure in the field of radiation protection in Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo”, the activities related to good management of disused sealed radioactive sources of radiation have been continued.

The European Commission has provided 1.5 mil. euros for the project, and only for the last two phases of the project 454,000.00 euros, intended for the removal, dismantling and transport of radioactive lightning rods, a job that was successfully accomplished by CETI Ltd. Funds for the storage of radioactive sealed sources, including radioactive lightning rods, were provided by the state of Montenegro. The successful implementation of this project is of great importance for the state and the citizens of Montenegro as the safe management of radioactive sources of radiation is one of the core activities that ensures the preservation and protection of life and health of present and future generations, as well as the protection of living and working environment. The beneficiaries of this project are the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism and the Environmental Protection Agency and the final beneficiaries are business entities and, most importantly, the citizens of Montenegro.
Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, Environmental Protection Agency for and CETI, with the support of the IAEA (INT9176 inter-regional project “Strengthening Grave-to-Cradle Control of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources in the Mediterranean Region” in the amount of 4.3 mil. euros, provided by the European Commission and the IAEA) will be the hosts are two important events:
  • Conditioning of sealed radioactive sources in a radioactive waste warehouse, in the period from 18 to 27 June 2014. Four IAEA experts, together with a team from CETI will perform the conditioning of radioactive sources in the warehouse, and under the control of the Inspection Authority – Environmental Inspection.
  • Inter-regional training course from 24 to 26 June 2014, dedicated to the management of disused sealed radioactive sources, which will, in addition to lecturers and participants from Montenegro, involve 17 representatives of competent institutions from 14 countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Macedonia, Tunisia and Turkey). The theoretical part of the training course will be held on 24 and 26 June 2014 at the Aurel Hotel. The practical demonstration exercise will be carried out in the radioactive waste warehouse on 25 June, when some practical activities conducted by the IAEA will be filmed as well.

Active participation of Montenegrin institutions in the project INT9176 is the best evidence of the willingness of relevant institutions in this area to meet all the requirements of international standards. More information about the events can be obtained from the following contact persons:
